Vertuo vs VertuoPlus: Which Nespresso Vertuo to Buy Now

The VertuoPlus has left Nespresso's US lineup. We compare the original Vertuo, which is still sold, with its successors: Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop+ and Vertuo Up.
September 25, 2026

Vertuo vs VertuoPlus used to be a common question for people shopping for a Nespresso machine. Both belong to the Vertuo line rather than the Original line, and they looked and worked much alike.

The question has changed since then. The original Vertuo is still sold by Nespresso in the US, but the VertuoPlus has dropped out of Nespresso’s US lineup. Its place has been taken by newer machines, mainly the Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop+ and Vertuo Up. In this article, we compare the original Vertuo with those successors so you can see which one fits your kitchen and budget.

Updated September 2026: product availability, specs and prices re-checked.

Nespresso Vertuo

Nespresso Vertuo

This is the original Nespresso Vertuo, with no other name attached. Nespresso still sells it in chrome and matte black. Like every Vertuo machine, it reads a barcode on each capsule and adjusts the brew automatically, and it spins the capsule to brew (Nespresso calls this Centrifusion). That lets it make both espresso and larger cups of coffee with the press of one button.

According to Nespresso’s listing, the Vertuo has:

  • A 40 oz removable water tank
  • A used-capsule container that holds 13 large (mug) capsules
  • A 15-second heat-up time and a 1350-watt rating
  • Automatic capsule ejection and automatic shut-off after 9 minutes
  • A weight of about 10.9 lb

The one-button operation makes it simple to use. The downsides are the ones every Vertuo owner lives with: the capsules cost more per cup than ground coffee, and you can only use Vertuo capsules. It is also the priciest of the basic models, at about $220 on Nespresso’s US site (September 2026). That’s more than the newer, smaller machines below.

What Happened to the VertuoPlus?

The VertuoPlus was the step-up version of the Vertuo. Its best-known feature was a motorized head that opened at the touch of a button and closed automatically, where the original Vertuo uses a manual lever. It was also taller and sleeker.

As of September 2026, the VertuoPlus no longer has a product page in Nespresso’s US machine lineup, and the standard VertuoPlus listings in Nespresso’s store show as out of stock. You may still find leftover or refurbished units at other retailers. If you want a current machine with the same one-touch convenience, look at the models below.

The VertuoPlus Successors

Vertuo Next

The Vertuo Next is a slim machine, only about 5.5 inches wide. Nespresso says it brews six sizes, from espresso up to a full carafe. It has a 37 oz water tank, holds 10 used capsules and weighs 8.8 lb. It shuts off automatically after 2 minutes. It costs about $126 on Nespresso’s US site (September 2026).

Vertuo Pop+

The Vertuo Pop+ is the entry-level Vertuo and the cheapest way into the system, at about $100 to $110 depending on the version (September 2026). It brews five cup sizes and heats up in about 30 seconds. It also has a Coffee Creations mode for iced coffee. The capsule container is small, holding 8 espresso or 5 mug capsules, and the Deluxe versions add chrome accents and a larger 37 oz water tank.

Vertuo Up

The Vertuo Up is Nespresso’s newest fast model. The company says it is ready to brew in about 3 seconds. It offers six cup sizes and connects to the Nespresso app, which lets you customize cup size and temperature. It has a 47 oz water tank that rotates for easier refilling, a large container for 13 mug or 18 espresso capsules, and room for travel mugs up to 7.5 inches tall. It costs about $161 on Nespresso’s US site (September 2026).

If You Want Milk Drinks

None of the machines above froth milk on their own, though Nespresso sells most of them in bundles with its Aeroccino frother. If you want built-in milk, the Vertuo Lattissima has a 16 oz milk container for one-touch cappuccinos and lattes, and the Vertuo Creatista adds a steam wand. Both cost far more than the basic machines.

How Do They Compare?

All of these machines use the same Vertuo capsules and brew the same way, so the coffee in the cup is similar. The differences are in size, speed and features:

  • Cheapest: Vertuo Pop+
  • Slimmest: Vertuo Next
  • Fastest, with app control and the biggest tank: Vertuo Up
  • Classic design with the original manual lever: Vertuo

Which One Should You Buy?

If you liked the original Vertuo vs VertuoPlus idea of “simple versus more automated,” the choice now looks like this.

For the lowest price, pick the Vertuo Pop+. It does the basics well, but you’ll empty the small capsule bin often.

For a narrow counter, the Vertuo Next is the one to get. It’s the most direct replacement for the VertuoPlus in everyday use.

If you brew several cups a day and hate waiting, the Vertuo Up’s fast heat-up, bigger tank and large capsule bin are worth the extra money.

The original Vertuo still makes sense if you like its design, but it now costs more than the Next and Pop+, and it lacks the Up’s speed and app control.

Prices change often, and Nespresso machines are also sold at other major retailers, so compare prices before you buy.

Conclusion

The old Vertuo vs VertuoPlus debate is mostly settled, because the VertuoPlus has left Nespresso’s US lineup. The original Vertuo is still around, but the Vertuo Next, Pop+ and Up give you the same coffee for less money or with more features.

They all brew the same Vertuo capsules, so choose based on price, counter space and how many cups you make a day.
